Common Warning Lights and Their Meaning

What Does That Warning Light Mean?

Some of the symbols on your car’s dashboard are pretty self-explanatory. Others are a bit harder to decipher, so it’s good for drivers to be aware of all of them. Here are a few of the most common warning lights, their meaning and what to do when you see them.

Oil Light

The image of an old-fashioned oil is the oil pressure warning light. Newer models may display the word “OIL” instead. The oil pressure warning light means that your vehicle’s oil levels are low or that the oil pump isn’t circulating enough oil. Generally, it means that it’s time for you to schedule an oil change.

Tire Pressure Light

The tire pressure warning light resembles a flat tire. If it lights up and stays on, then it means your vehicle's tire pressure is either too high or not high enough. If the symbol flashes when you first turn your vehicle on, it’s an indication that there is an issue with your tire pressure monitoring system. Check your tire pressure. If it is low, inflate it to the manufacturer recommended levels. If the light remains on after the pressure has been corrected, make an appointment with our service center.

Engine Temperature Warning Light

If you see a thermometer on your dashboard, it means your engine is running hot. This can mean something extremely important has gone wrong or simply that the coolant in your engine is low. Turn your engine off, wait about fifteen minutes to let it cool, then check your coolant levels.

Check Engine Light

Your check engine light means exactly what the title describes. It could indicate so many things that the best course of action is to have your engine checked by a trained professional.

Battery Warning Light

The battery warning light looks like a rectangle with a plus and minus sign. It means there is a problem in your vehicle’s charging system. It might be your alternator, your starter, a dead battery or just a loose cable. Make sure the battery is properly connected and doesn’t have any corrosion. If neither is the issue, make an appointment with your mechanic near New Braunfels, TX.
